GAMI breaks the ice with the single “Glass”
GAMI, a trio from Marseille, is releasing a new track on September 24 from their first full-length album, Underneath, set to be released on October 23. Quite different from the first single, “Anymore”, which leaned into an industrial rock sound à la Kidneythieves, as the music video’s aesthetic made abundantly clear, the new track “Glass” delves deeper into the band’s trip-hop roots and hints at an album rich in sonic depth. GAMI has begun its evolution, with Capucine Trotobas (vocals/bass and keyboards), composer of the first two EPs (Make a Path in 2021 and Step by Step in 2023), now making more room for her bandmates.
It was drummer David Benzazon (1003, David Marques Quartet, Mervyn) who took on the challenge, delivering a track of rare sensitivity that highlights the importance of being oneself and gives Capucine’s voice a more open space for expression; the whole experience evokes for the listener sensations already experienced while listening to, for example, Radiohead’s Kid A.
Drawing on a personal experience, David explains that he wanted to “highlight the feeling of being trapped in an inner emotional whirlpool, with nothing coming out.” The fear of speaking one’s mind, of hurting others, and the resulting pressure to stop being oneself found an echo in the world of pretense in Philip K. Dick’s Blade Runner, which inspired David as he wrote the lyrics. The fantastical music video, co-directed by David Benzazon and Cassandra Felgueiras, perfectly symbolizes with glass this need to break the ice in order to reestablish communication and reconnect, a shared journey toward tomorrow.
Beyond the quality of the visuals, this new track highlights the Marseille-based trio’s songwriting talent and the diversity of their influences, ranging from industrial rock to trip-hop, and, with Underneath, heralds an album of great maturity that will elevate GAMI to the ranks of today’s must-hear acts, outside established genres and off the beaten path.
