This new album by rapper Isaiah Rashad is sort of a comeback within a comeback, since—after disappearing from the radar and releasing an album in 2021—it took five years for us to hear It’s Been Awful, a title that’s by no means an exaggeration: On it, the rapper addresses addictions of all kinds and settles some scores, painting a wild portrait of his family and loved ones—a portrait that, on its own, explains his inability to produce music. His understated, soul-tinged rap adds to this intimate journey, where he’s joined by a few featured artists—including SZA, Dominic Fike, and Julian Sintonia—to deliver an album that’s unexpected in every sense of the word.
