Alfredo 2 (Freddie Gibbs and The Alchemist)

Following their debut album Alfredo, released in the midst of the pandemic, the powerhouse duo of rapper Freddie and producer The Alchemist has delivered a natural follow-up, featuring polished American hip-hop—refined in both lyrics and flow as well as in the production, which is simply perfect. The result is compelling and melodic, less dark than its predecessor, and across 14 tracks, the two collaborators—backed by a host of guest appearances—unfold a cinematic world steeped in jazz that evokes the ’90s and brings to mind a certain Guru. While inevitably less surprising than the first installment, this Alfredo 2 remains incredibly effective.
